Camp NaNo: Silk and Steel

Ahoi! Here’s the next bit! Switching viewpoints to Spyro and the doctor now… forgive the brief as I’m juggling small children! XD Hope you are all keeping safe and well 🙂 x

“Who did you kill this time?” All trace of ambiguity had vanished from Spyro’s tone now that he was alone with the alchemist. He was furious, and it showed in every aspect of his being.

“Why does it matter to you?” the doctor replied calmly. “The man offended me, he is now dead, that is an end of it.”

“It was a party.” Spyro spat incredulously. “A party I trusted you to host. A party that could have brought us connections from as far away as Pav’shamah and Lycandrus! Thanks to the fact that you cannot hold your temper, or fail to see every minor slight as incitement to murder, it will bring us nothing but the attentions of the city watch!”

The doctor regarded him steadily, “The city watch have been in our pocket for years. Don’t tell me you fear that Commander Kaili will suddenly refuse your coin… or anything else you offer her…for the sake of a Lycandrian half-demon?”

“So that’s who it was.”

“I have told you, it little matters who,” the djin was suddenly up close and personal, “I will not tolerate any man’s disrespect.”

“You don’t frighten me.” Spyro spat. “You wouldn’t dare to raise a finger against me under this roof, and if you give me any reason to believe that I should be watching my back I will pull every string I have woven in ward against that eventuality and bring the whole of Hell crashing down upon you before you can draw your next breath.”

The Doctor’s Soul-blade was at his throat in a heartbeat, biting cold into his flesh, drawing a single ruby bead of blood. “That’s interesting,” the doctor said softly, “not many of us bleed around here.” He pushed Spyro hard into the wall, snapped shut his soul blade and returned it to his pocket calmly. “What exactly are you Spyro Mendicci?”

Spyro touched a finger to the droplets on his neck, examined them and glared furiously at the djin. “It little matters,” he spat, “all I am to you now, is the catalyst of your demise.”

“Brave words, spoken in fear. I see you tremble Spyro, I see the cold sweat upon your brow. I helped you put in place every strand of the twisted web you’ve woven through this city, you may presume I can pick it apart again just as easily.” He smiled and walked towards the door, whistling a snatch of some old nursery rhyme as went.

He paused with his hand on the knob and smiled, “Ah, I know who you are” he said softly, turning to smirk at the antiques dealer, “but without his web,” he raised his fingers high in the air and wriggled them, “the little spider falls to the ground… and is easily crushed.” He mimed the little finger-play, grinding the imaginary spider under his boot heel with ferocious delight.

  2. Oh that was magnificent…but blimey! Eeek…the doc is terrifying. 😨In the bestest, most malevolent, way.😈 Even his exit was a masterclass of Machiavellian scurrilousness😹

In every snippet you keep surpassing yourself in rustling up such skullduggerous coves. Each as unique as they are scoundrelly, cunning, sinister or downright demonic 😁 Oh I love this story, it is the Death by Chocolate Cake of devilish delights and every bit as delectable. 😋😻 xxxx
